The Rodeph Sholom School B'nai Mitzvah Philanthropic Initiative provides each year's seventh graders with an intensive and inspiring social learning experience. Families of seventh graders  contribute funds instead of making bar or bat mitzvah gifts to each other. The students then learn about tikkun olam and tzedakah as they research numerous nonprofit organizations before selecting specific nonprofits to support with their fund. The student work in small groups, visit several nonprofit organizations in New York City, and present their findings to their peers before deciding how to distribute their fund.
